Jazzy 88.9 WCSU Salutes Black History Month - James H. McGee

February is Black History Month and Jazzy 88.9 WCSU is paying tribute to the many African-Americans who have made a difference in the Miami Valley. Today we salute The Honorable James H. McGee.

He was Dayton, Ohio's first African-American Mayor and longest tenured running 12 years from 1970 to 1981. He also served as City Commissioner completing the term of Don Crawford in 1967 who left to became the city's County Clerk. Much of James McGee's early work was for the NAACP and was involved in several landmark cases in Dayton area.

During his tenure as Mayor, James McGee greatly improved the well-being of the city and testified before Congress on behalf of Dayton. He traveled around the U.S and abroad on behalf of both political and civil organizations. McGee was a member of various organizations including the Freemasons, NAACP, Alpha Psi Alpha and National Bar Association.
