Passing the Torch

In this powerful mini-episode of Curious About Art?, host Ena Nearon brings together two visionary voices from Ohio’s Black arts movement—Baba Willis “Bing” Davis and Alandes Powell—for a spirited reflection on legacy, leadership, and the future of Black artistic expression.

-Artist, James Pate

Baba Willis “Bing” Davis is a nationally recognized artist, educator, and cultural elder based in Dayton, Ohio. With a career spanning six decades, Davis has exhibited internationally and mentored generations of artists through his Africentric approach to art and education. He is the founder of the EbonNia Gallery and a lifelong advocate for using art as a tool for cultural preservation and social change.

Alandes Powell is the founder and force behind Black Art Speaks, a Cincinnati-based organization dedicated to elevating Black voices through the arts. She led the creation of the Black Lives Matter street mural in downtown Cincinnati and continues to champion projects that center Black artists, narratives, and community healing through visual storytelling and public engagement.

In Passing the Torch, listeners will hear the energy of two generations in dialogue—where the wisdom of experience meets the momentum of now.
