Jazzy 88.9 WCSU Salutes Black History Month - Lewis A. Jackson

February is Black History Month and Jazzy 88.9 WCSU is paying tribute to the many African-Americans who have made a difference in the Miami Valley. Today we salute Lewis A. Jackson, Civilian Chief of Flight Instruction for the Tuskegee Airmen.

He was one of the first African-American Military Aviators in the U.S Armed Forces. The Xenia resident served as President at both Wilberforce University and as interim President at Central State University from 1970 to 1972. Lewis A. Jackson overcame racial discrimination inside and outside the military. The Tuskegee Airmen flew over 1500 combat missions in World War II and received several awards including 8 Purple Hearts, 14 Bronze Stars and 700 Air Medals. Lewis Jackson was a charter member of the Greene County Regional Airport Authority and was instrumental in the construction of the Greene County Airport. The Airport was later named in his honor. A scholarship has been established in his name to help Greene County youth obtain training leading to careers in aviation.

This Black History tribute is brought to you by your Miami Valley Jazz Authority, Jazzy 88.9 WCSU.
