Album Review

Nicholas Payton, the jazz trumpeter from New Orleans, has implemented different styles of jazz on "Nick @ Night" with extreme overtones of his participation with Christian McBride's Big Band. The title cut is a traditional piece with a contemporary mind set featuring Anthony Wonsey's piano arrangement. “Beyond The Stars” takes a page from the old swing era as Wonsey and Payton delivers a delightful harpsichord medley.

“Sun Goddess,” the 70's Ramsey Lewis extravaganza received a surprising makeover that zoned in on those old post-bop memories.

“Nick @ Night” is not your typical contemporary jazz album many of us are accustomed to in today's jazz but the concepts here are well defined, composed, creative with plenty of improvisation.
