February is Black History Month and Jazzy 88.9 WCSU is paying tribute to the many African-Americans who have made a difference in the Miami Valley. Today we salute Billy "Sweet Pea" Strayhorn, African-American jazz composer, pianist, lyricist and arranger from Dayton, Ohio.
He is best known for his successful collaboration with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington. Strayhorn's compositions include "Take The A Train," Chelsea Bridge" and "Lush Life." Though Duke Ellington took much of the credit from his work, he would joke on stage that "Strayhorn does a lot of the work but I get to take the bows." Billy Strayhorn was introduced to jazz by pianists Art Tatum and Teddy Wilson at age 19, who guided him into the realm of jazz.
Strayhorn's strong character was embraced by many artists including Lena Horne who a major influence for her career. Strayhorn used his classical background to improve Horne's singing technique. Billy Strayhorn also participated in many Civil Rights causes and was a committed friend to Dr. Martin Luther King and would arrange and conduct "King Fit The Battle Of Alabama" for the Ellington Orchestra in 1963 dedicated to King.
This Black History tribute is brought to you by your Miami Valley Jazz Authority, Jazzy 88.9 WCSU.
